JOHN S. BUCKLEY, JR. FORMER FURNITURE RETAILER

John Schuyler "Sonny" Buckley, Jr., 87 of Ontelaunee Township, died April 29, 2008 in the Emergency Room at Reading Hospital.

 

He was the husband of Ruth Arlene (Hain) Buckley whom he married January 30, 1943. They had celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with family and friends at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Born November 26, 1920 in Ontelaunee Township, he was a son of the late John Schuyler, Sr. and Eva E. (Eberly) Buckley.

John was a 1938 graduate of Ontelaunee Vocational School.

 

He was the owner and operator, along with his wife, of Gilbert's Furniture from 1962 until his retirement in 1994.

John was a past auditor for Ontelaunee Township for a number of years and served as past trustee

of Good Shepherd Cemetery for over forty years.

He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Muhlenberg Township where he was past member

of the church council, building committee, search committee, church choir and property committee.

He was also an adult committee leader of the Boy Scout Troup #155 and Explorer Post #155.

John was a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies.

He loved his family, church and dogs.

 

Also surviving are four children: Denton L., Sr., husband of Kathleen N. (Schoning) Buckley of Muhlenberg Township;

Sharon R. (Buckley), wife of Harry L. Brungess of Norristown, Montgomery County;

Ronald K., husband of Cynde L. (Fisher) Buckley of Bernville and Suzanne L. (Buckley) wife of Scott A. Blatt of Exeter Township.

There are also seven grandchildren: Kathlynn Y. (Buckley), wife of Michael J. Knarr;

Denton L. Buckley, Jr.; Jonelle M. Buckley; Mary S. (Buckley), wife of Gregory A. Hamm; Julie L. (Buckley),

wife of Josh R. Sweetwood; Derick S. Blatt fiancé of Nichole L. Young and Stephanie L. Blatt.

In addition there are seven great grandchildren: Christopher M. Knarr, Kiara L. Knarr, Aaron M. Hess,

Jade L. Sweetwood, Madison N. Buckley, Jackson R. Sweetwood and Colton J. Buckley.

John was predeceased by a son-in-law Larry L. Pickell who died, April 1, 1996 as well as five siblings:

Mae R. (Buckley) Hyneman; Dorothy (Buckley) Schmehl; Sara (Buckley) Kehr; Harriet (Buckley) Bancroft and Adam S. Buckley.
